There's some evidence that the name was starting to destabilise as
long ago as Sept. 86, when, my yellowing files show, I wrote briefly
about the place for Books Ireland. As well as misspelling my name
(which is, after all, almost obligatory) they edited it to refer only
to "a Dublin bookshop". Which was a pity, since I was trying to record
some of the enthusiasm and energy I met, specifically, at The Winding
Stair. Could be the same sub-editor, moved on from Books Ireland to
Radio Times, is responsible for the more recent gaff?
Let's widen this out a bit and ask: what are the other Sacred Sites of
Poetry Reading? Places where acoustic and environment (and usually a
hell of a lot of organisational graft) work together to produce
strings of memorable events? I'm obviously going to say Morden Tower,
who'd like to nominate another?
Conversely, what's the worst place you've ever read? The one where
your words froze as they came out of your mouth and clunked into
little metalic heaps at your feet etc?
