Stephen --
The opprobrium you imply in suggesting that a book might end up in a
charity shop selling for 10p is something I simply can't appreciate. It's
tantamount to prescribing as a condition of literary seriousness that a
poetry product must accrete commercial value if it is to be of literary
value. I think that's rubbish, despite the body of empirical data in eg
Bourdieu.
To rattle on about the great variety of people in the world is all very
well, and sets up a nice rosy mist over the issue. What you're not saying
up front is that your argument takes it for granted that the only or the
best way to be 'inclusive' is to be included in a chain store inventory.
Possibly my idea of poetic value is a tad more Heideggerian, but I doubt
it.
