I have a lot of sympathy for Alaric's viewpoint however the one point I can
think of for copyright is that it can prevent anyone else from claiming
ownership of one's work. I'd be very very miffed if anything like that
happened to me as I imagine is the ghost of John Clare re a certain
academic.
Otherwise, copyright is one the many forces that impede the distibution of
poetry and helps recast an art that should be a freespace of the mind into a
minor and highly parasitized capitalist industry.
