THE POET COWPER
1731 - 1800
A Symposium
To celebrate the life and works of William Cowper on the occasion of the
200th anniversary of his death
27 - 30 April, 2000
William Cowper - poet, hymnwriter, translator of Homer - died on 25 April
1800. A symposium to mark the 200th anniversary of his death will be held
in Olney, Buckinghamshire, England, where he lived from 1768 - 1786 during
the most creative period of his life.
The Cowper and Newton Museum, in collaboration with the British Society for
Eighteenth Century Studies, has arranged a varied and stimulating programme
of events around a series of lectures by eight leading scholars of Cowper
and his period.
These will include a play based on an incident in the poet's life, a guided
walk from Olney to Weston Underwood with readings from his poetry en route,
a Gala Dinner with a distinguished guest speaker, and a commemorative
service in Olney parish church . Tours to Berkhamsted, scene of his
childhood, and to East Dereham , where he died and is buried, will be
arranged for the Sunday afternoon if there is sufficient demand.
