Call for Papers
HOGG, SCOTLAND, AND ROMANTICISM
The Ninth James Hogg Society Conference
to be held at
The University of Strathclyde (Glasgow, Scotland)
5 - 7 July 2000
Interest in James Hogg (1770-1835) is currently at a high
level, thanks in part to the appearance of the Stirling /
South Carolina Research Edition of his collected works,
eight volumes of which will have been published by the
Edinburgh University Press by the end of 1999. Indeed, Hogg
is now emerging as a key figure in Scottish and British
Romanticism, both as a novelist and as a poet.
The Ninth James Hogg Society Conference will provide a forum
for the discussion of all aspects of Hogg and his world, and
speakers will be invited to offer their papers for
consideration for publication in the Hogg Society's
peer-reviewed journal, Studies in Hogg and His World. Those
wishing to deliver a paper at the conference are invited to
post or e-mail a proposal to:
Douglas Mack

Proposals should arrive by 30 January 2000, but early
submission is strongly encouraged. Further information
regards speakers, programme, accommodations, and the Hogg
2000 website will be announced at a later date.
Hogg figured prominently at the landmark conference
on "Scott, Scotland, and Romanticism" held at the University
of Oregon in July 1999, and the ninth James Hogg Society
Conference offers an opportunity for further exploration of
the various exciting lines of thought that opened up in
Oregon.
Attendance at the Hogg Conference in 2000 may conveniently
be combined with attendance at a conference on "Stevenson,
Scotland and Samoa," to be held at the University of
Stirling, 10-14 July 2000. Details may be obtained from
Eric Massie, Department of English Studies, University of
Stirling ( [log in to unmask] ).
