Conference theme: "Tomorrow in Yesterday, or the Frolics of Possibility"
Proposals are invited for a session tentatively titled "Jane Austen in the
Media, the Marketplace, and Popular Culture." I am looking for papers which
will discuss the uses and representation of Austen and/or her works within
popular culture, preferably within the twentieth century. Possible topics
include:
--film adaptations
--rise of tourism in Britain connected with success of film adaptations
--Fay Weldon's Letters to Alice on First Reading Jane Austen
--Sheila Kaye-Smith's and G.B. Stern's Talking about Jane Austen and More
Talk about Jane Austen
--academic vs. Janeite modes of reading/interpretation
--Austenite activity including JASNA
--academic interventions in popular representations of Austen
--Chawton as tourist destination
--continuations or sequels to Austen's novels
--The Jane Austen Cookbook
--Jane Austen mystery series by Stephanie Barron
--advice/wisdom books gleaned from Austen's writings (includes The Wit and
Wisdom of Jane Austen; The Jane Austen Sampler: A Quotable Companion of Wit
and Wisdom; The Sayings of Jane Austen; Bite-Size Jane Austen: Sense and
Sensibility from One of England's Greatest Writers; and Your Loving Sister:
