SHEFFIELD HALLAM UNIVERSITY, SHEFFIELD, UK
One Year Research Fellowship
in English Literature
The Post
The post is a one year post-doctoral fellowship to be held within the
English Subject-Group. The fellow will be engaged on the Corvey Project,
funded by the British Academy.
The Corvey Project
Funded by the Humanities Research Board of the British Academy, the Corvey
Project is one of the largest research projects of its kind in Britain. The
core of the project is the University's copy of Edition Corvey, a
collection of novels, poems, plays and literary miscellanies from Schloss
Corvey in Germany, published on microfiche by Belser. The collection covers
the period 1770-1850, with the bulk of the material falling in the period
1800-1830, where the collection of novels represents something like 80% of
the total published. The Corvey Project has a two-fold purpose: to map the
writing by women as it is represented within Edition Corvey, and to make
the results available to the international scholarly community using
information technology. The grant was awarded to Professor Judy Simons and
Dr. Noel Williams and runs until Feb., 2000. The Corvey Project team
includes the two British Academy Fellows, Dr. Emma Clery and the new
appointment; the current project director, Prof. Michael Worboys (who is
also the head of the Cultural Research Institute); four literature
specialists, Prof. Judy Simons, Prof. Robert Miles, Dr. Philip Cox and Dr.
Lisa Hopkins; two Information Technology specialists, Dr. Noel Williams
and Dr. Glenn Dibert-Himes; and a visiting Professor, Dr. Stephen Behrendt
from the University of Nebraska. There are currently three research
students working on material directly relating to the Project, and six
students completing their undergraduate dissertations on Corvey Project
authors. Candidates may wish to visit the Project's web site at:

Job Description
The fellow will be expected to work closely with the Corvey Project team.
The project is entering the final year of its four year lifespan. The
fellow will be replacing Dr. Glenn Dibert-Himes, who has recently been
appointed to a Principle Lectureship in Information Technology in the
Humanities, within the School of Cultural Studies at Sheffield Hallam.
The Corvey Project has two main goals. The first is to provide a critical
'map' of the women's writing found in Edition Corvey; the second is to
utilize Information Technology to make the results available to the wider
scholarly community. Dr. Dibert-Himes was responsible for delivering the
project's Information Technology goals, a responsibility he will maintain
in his new post.
The Corvey Project team has decided that the best way of disseminating its
findings is through a refereed web-site. An advisory board has been
created. Board members include Anne Mellor, Clifford Siskin, Peter Garside,
James Raven, Janet Todd, Isobel Grundy, Edward Copeland, Stuart Curran,
Stephen Behrendt, Jane Spencer and Isobel Armstrong.
The fellow will be responsible for:
* Researching the women's writing within the collection.
* Working with the Dr. Emma Clery in administering the refereed web-site.
* Working with Dr. Glenn Dibert-Himes in maintaining the Corvey web-site
and database. The candidate will participate in the onsite management of
this system.
The successful applicant will have scholarly expertise in women's writing
of the Romantic period and a close knowledge of the kind of material
contained within Edition Corvey. Information Technology experience will be
an advantage, as will publications in the field.
