Can't help with the first question, but Barrett's degree may have been
conferred in honour of or expectation of the founding of the Royal
Conservatory of Music in Toronto in 1886. I strongly suspect that his work
on choral music, church music, or music history in general earned him the
award, as Canadian universities outside of Memorial (and perhaps especially
U of T and the Royal Conservatory) have never been very receptive to the
study of traditional song and music.
