CALL FOR PAPERS

III CONFERENCE OF THE LATIN AMERICAN BRANCH OF IASPM
Bogotá, August 24-27, 2000

This Conference is organized by the Latin American branch of IASPM, the
Academia Superior de Artes de Bogotá (ASAB), the Instituto de Cultura y
Turismo de Bogotá, the Ministerio de Cultura de Colombia and the Instituto
Colombiano de Antropología. ASAB is an ideal place for the Conference,
because this academy has implemented a pioneering program for the study
and practice of Colombian and Latin American popular music.

The objectives of the Conference are:
1. Bring together researchers from Latin America, the Caribbean and other
regions interested in the study of popular music of (or in) Latin America.
2. Promote the mutual recognition and circulation of interdisciplinary
research in the area of popular music of Latin America.
3. Consolidate the Latin American branch of IASPM and establish continued
modes of interaction between researchers, institutions and countries.

The Conference is organized in four major areas of interest, and includes
practical workshops, and special guests. The four areas of interest are:

1. POPULAR MUSIC AND EDUCATION IN LATIN AMERICA. The study of popular music
in Latin America has been approached not only for academic purposes, but
for teaching purposes, systematizing popular music within a formal
curriculum, at different educational levels. Today, in the midst of
so-called cultural recuperation movements, and with multiculturalism as an
agenda of cultural politics in various countries of the region, the
frameworks for appropriating such music into new types of educational
spaces have multiplied. This area of interest intends to explore the
implications of these different modes of musical recontextualization and
mobilization in the structuring of the popular music of the region.

2. DISCIPLINARY DISCOURSES AND POPULAR MUSIC IN LATIN AMERICA. The study of
popular music in Latin America has emerged as a fragmented disciplinary
terrain that is approached not only from diverse academic disciplines but
also from diverse types of musical practices and relations to the academy.
This fragmentation has generated radically different approaches to the
study of popular music. This area of interest explores the different
perspectives from which the study of popular music is being approached and
the way these perspectives are immersed in social, institutional and
political processes in the region.

3. INTERACTION BETWEEN THE LOCAL AND THE GLOBAL IN THE REDEFINITION OF
POPULAR MUSIC IN LATIN AMERICA. An element that is playing a crucial role
in redesigning the symbolic map of musical cultures in Latin America is the
interactive and contradictory processes of regionalization and
globalization. In this area of interest we explore the implications of
these processes in the restructuring of popular music in Latin America and
the Caribbean.

4. THE HISTORY OF POPULAR MUSICS IN LATIN AMERICA. This area of interest
seeks to situate historically the emergence and establishment of popular
music in Latin America and the Caribbean during the XIX and XX centuries.
