Re: Luisa's remark about the dark side of lullabies and the woman's frame
of mind... Last year when my son was very little (he's only 15 months now),
my husband would always emend the "and down will come baby, cradle and all"
verse of "Rockabye Baby" to "but no harm comes to baby, no none at all."
He thinks the regular version is just terrible.
I, on the other hand, as a stressed, sleep-deprived grad student/new
mother, found a strange satisfaction in sweetly singing about the baby's
crashing down to the ground, especially on bad days. I usually only sang
my husband's version if he was listening.
