Back in 1953 or 1954 when I was living in New York a friend loaned me
an album he had picked up in France recently called "Les Ouvrieres
Chantaient" (I may not have that letter-perfect, but then it's been a
long time now). It consisted of three or four ten-inch 78rpm shellac
discs. I can't name all the songs; the only one I can remember for
sure is "The Peat Bog Soldiers," though as I recall the rest was
pretty predictable left-wing stuff of the time. But it was definitely
a choir and definitely aimed at social change. All songs were, I
believe, in French. So, for what it's worth, there you go. I think
it's remarkable I remember it at all.
