Dear List members

Info on this event. Apologies for any cross-postings:

			The BAC Annual Conference 1999

				'FISH OUT OF WATER'

No profession can stand still - the need to stay flexible and to cope with
new working practices often now seems to be the only constant in a changing
world. The 1999 BAC conference, which takes place directly after the AGM,
brings you the opportunity to hear three archive and records management
professionals reflecting on career paths which have involved them moving
into 'non-traditional' fields of expertise.

Topics and speakers for this year's conference are:

"Behind The Scenes At The Museum - Coping With Curators"
(Richard Taylor, Curator Archive Collections, National Railway Museum)
With the new quango "MLAC" - the Museums. Libraries and Archives Council -
soon to become a reality, what are the problems and opportunities for a
business archivist working with museum professionals. Can we use them to
give us a higher public profile without becoming swamped?

"From Broad Acres to Square Mile"
(Victor Gray, Head of Corporate Records and Archives, N M Rothschild & Sons
Ltd)
The former County Archivist of Essex talks about making the transition from
public sector to private business. Are they really so different?

"It's all Good Practice - Scientific Archives and Information Management."
(John Davies, UK Head of Information Management, Glaxo Wellcome Research)
Probably about as far as you can get from parchment title deeds - an
archivist holds his own in a clinical environment.

The day will be chaired by Serena Kelly, Museum Archivist, Victoria &
Albert Museum

In a break with tradition the conference will this year be held away from
London, in the impressive and award-winning surroundings of the National
Railway Museum in York.

Why not come up to York the afternoon before the conference? You'll save
enough on the cost of an off-peak train ticket to pay for a hotel, and you
can have a relaxing night enjoying the atmosphere of this beautiful
historic city and its 180 pubs!

If you can tear yourself away from these the National Railway Museum has
kindly offered to host a Pre-Conference Evening Reception for delegates on
the 20th October if there is sufficient demand. This is your chance to
have a look at what goes on behind the scenes at this particular museum.
It's also a rare opportunity to have a relaxed private view of the
most-visited museum outside London, home to the icons of the Railway Age -
including, for this year only, Stephenson's "Rocket", the spark that
started the railway revolution.

So BOOK NOW to ensure your place for what promises to be an entertaining
and informative day, in a pleasant environment and in a beautiful part of
the world.
