Dear listservers,
In light of recent discussion on this list concerning registration (which I
don't really want to re-start, certainly not if it is confined to the merits
or otherwise of 'designatory letters'), it is interesting to note from that
our US archival colleagues have opted for re-certification every five years,
either by examination or petition.
This is a measure which is surely designed to promote 'lifelong learning'
within the American profession. I can't help feeling that the issue of
whether similar arrangements should be established in Britain and Ireland to
encourage continuous professional development is one which the Society of
Archivists' Membership and Registration Panel will have to re-visit.
If and when it does, the experience and advice of bodies like the Academy of
Certified Archivists may prove to be of tremendous help.

Academy of Certified Archivists Launches New WebSite
The Academy of Certified Archivists is pleased to announce that is
has obtained its own internet domain name "certifiedarchivists.org". It
has also updated and enhanced its website to provide better access to
information about the Academy. President Susan C. Box, C.A., commented: "
It is critical for the ACA to be able to provide updated, information on its
ongoing programs to its members and to those seeking archival certification.
In an age of instant communication, the new website provides us the
opportunity to interface with our constituents in a relevant and immediate
fashion."
Regent for Outreach Phil Mooney, C.A., extended appreciation to the
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for hosting ACA's first website. He said
"Tim Ericson and Mark Vargas are to be especially thanked for their
assistance in hosting and developing the Academy's first website. The new
website will be that much better due to the groundwork laid in that first
effort." He concluded by acknowledging the assistance of UW-M archivist
Leslie Heinrichs in making a smooth transition to the new internet service
provider, CapuNet LLC.
The new ACA website is designed by Pauline Chvilicek of CapuNet LLC,
a Rockville, Maryland firm specializing in corporate internet content. It
includes basic information on the Academy, its mission, history and
activities, certification and recertification procedures including the
Handbook for Archival Certification, listings of new Academy members and
1999 examination sites, key contact points for specific ACA information, and
helpful links to other archival organizations and resources. The current
newsletter should be mounted shortly and a newsletter archive is in the
planning stage. The site can be accessed at
http://www.certifiedarchivists.org.
