ROYAL COMMISSION ON HISTORICAL MANUSCRIPTS
TEMPORARY RESEARCH EDITORS
Applications for two posts of temporary research editor, to run from
May 1999 for up to eleven months, are invited from graduate historians
with research experience or from qualified archivists.
The Commission collects and disseminates information about manuscript
sources for British history.
The first post will be within the team that maintains and develops the
National Register of Archives, and will be concerned with the
preparation of a new Family and Estate Index. The work will involve
the revision of existing information, research to fill gaps in the
Commission's knowledge, and the development of the Index as an exemplar
of national and international standards.
The second post will be within the Commission's Guides and Surveys
team, and will be concerned with the preparation of a published guide
to the Papers of Antiquaries and Historians, in the Guides to Sources
for British History series. The work will involve research for and the
preparation of entries for the guide, which is envisaged as a major
source for British historiography.
Both posts will provide some experience of the Commission's work as a
whole, as well as a chance to develop editorial and computer skills.
Candidates will need to demonstrate their interest in these areas, and
in one of the subject areas with which the projects are concerned.

London in April.
The salary will be £16,722 per annum pro rata.
