I am fairly sure there were some scientific studies of charcoal blast
furnaces done in Sweden in the early 20th century, including the classical
investigation method of suddenly cooling down an operating blast furnace,
then excavating it layer by layer to find out exactly what was happening. I
know I have seen a reference to a technical report on this, but can't find
it right now. You might try The Swedish Ironmasters' Association - I think
they have a web-site.
