Hello,
A question of grave found iron artifacts (namely cutlery) was brought up
on another list and I thought it best to post the question here.
Obviously exact weight is not possible, but are there accepted means of
estimation?

I realize sword in the old days were not the massive choppers
of Hollywood. But when checking
weights of, say, Viking long swords, has anyone tried to
factor in corrosion?
Reason being, I live in Nova Scotia, parts of which not
meaning to sound gross, but if they bury
someone in anything but a stainless coffin, they can use the
same grave 15 years down the road
and all that'll be down there is the coffin handles and
perhaps a belt buckle. If I were to bury a
sword blade weighing 2 pounds, I'm pretty sure there won't be
2 pounds of metal there 6 months
later, let alone 1000 years...
Just wondering.
