Someone asked about slag production earlier this year. I have just run across
the following in the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers,
Vol. 1, 1873 p 207. Uses of Blast Furnace Slag by Prof. T. Egleston.
"The amount of slag which flows from an ordinary blast furnace in twenty-four
hours may be calculated at very nearly twice the production in iron by weight,
and five to six times by bulk."
An early 20th century coke fired furnace produced only 1/2 the weight in slag
that it did in iron (Gordon, American Iron p 165, from 1925 The Making, Shaping
and Treating of Steel p.202)
