Chinese Cast Iron Technology and its Relation to ROM's Collection of Cast Iron Statuary
Early Chinese iron technology differs in fundamental ways from iron produced elsewhere in the world. Recent work carried out on the British Museum collections demonstrates this clearly. For example, Buddhist statuary, Song dynasty coins and Han dynasty swords have distinctive microstructures which can in some cases be related to their methods of production and possibly to smelting technology. The results of this work are likely to be applicable to the early Chinese iron in the ROM collections.
