When did blast furnaces begin the practice of marking pig iron? The ones I have
seen in the US have a furnace name or abbreviation and date. The earliest I
have seen in the US in 1734.
>From what I have read the dates on pigs represent the year of production.
Unlike with firebacks and stoves, where the date is often the date that the mold
was made.
I am especially interested in locating pigs that originated in 17/18C Virginia.
To date I have located pigs from Principio (MD), Spotswood's Tubal, Occoquan,
FC, and BC.
