Dear Fred,
Dorothy Hosler has studied the pre-Spanish metal cultures in western Mexico
- her latest book is entitled 'the Sound and Color of Metal' i believe, and
is about 2 years old. There she has some information about manufacturing as
well as a very impressive bibliography where she has other articles and
books. For Peru, Heather Lechtmann has worked on metals and also has an
impressive bibliography, but I can't remember any specific article at the
moment which includes casting. As I am at home I can't check my
references, so forgive me if this isn't 100% correct. I do seem to remember
that casting wasn't used in Mexico, but was in South America, while the
central, Meso-American cultures had both techniques, casting and hammering,
adopting techniques and metal uses both from north and from south.
sincerely,
carole
