Dear Dori,
Tom has been excavating tin smelting sites, in
particular Upper Merrivale, but he has not been working
on science of tin slags as far as I know. The people that
have been doing that were Effie Photos, Bryan Earl, Chris
Salter, and Gerry McDonnell for Devon and Cornwall. I has
also been work on material produced by H. Herdits from
Austrian sites.
It is possible to find small amounts of tin slag on
Dartmoor but other than in River banks such deposit
should not be touched without permission of the National
Park Archeological Officer, as they are all Scheduled
Ancient monuments as are large areas of the Park - it is
virtually one large fossilised industrial site.
There are good published maps the various tin
smelters and mills on the Moors Dating back to those of
Worth at the turn of the century. But, there are not many
good slag exposures, any surface tin slag exposure was
reworked by the 19th century miners due to the high tin
content of the early slags. So you would best get
material from excavated sites - Upper Merrivale and
Crift. I don't know if Sandy Gerrard recovered anything
from his excavations in Cornwall.
It would sugest that you join the Dartmoor Tin Research
Group, I am sure members could help you further as they
are actively mapping sites.
>From my own observations, there was not much weathering
on the 1600's slag from Upper Merrivale, however, the
1600 BC slag from Caerloggas did show a thin surface
weathering layer. At present I have slag from Caerloggas,
Merrival, and Crift Cornwall.
Incidentally, for my own interest, what are the aims of
your research, and what techniques are you intending to
use.
