Hello,
With guidance from Chris, I have at long last managed to get myself on to
this list! I hope I have the instructions right and this goes out to all who
are interested. I understand that there have been recent enquiries about both
the 'Early Iron and Steel in Sri Lanka' book and the video we made at the
time of the experiments.
I suggest anyone who is interested in the book should contact Archetype in
London as they are planning to stock it. They are at 6 Fitzroy Square, London
W1P 6DX, tel. 0171-380-0800 ([log in to unmask]).
The situation regarding the video is a bit more complicated. I know that I
have promised copies to several people at different times but so far have not
delivered on that promise. The problem is that to make good copies I have to
go back to the original Hi8 tape, which in turn means going through a (small)
box full of unedited tapes to find the right one, and I don't have easy
access to the equipment to look at them. If there is now sufficient interest
to encourage to me I could get that done, especially as the colleagues who
first worked with me on the video are now based in London (rather than
Colombo). The tape in question is about half an hour long and includes
general 'footage' as well as shots of the furnace in operation. It was made
(edited) just a few days after the experiments and is very much cinema
vérité. I also have many hours of unedited tape of the furnaces in operation
as well as traditional Sri Lankan blacksmiths at work and would like, in
time, to put together another more specialist video concentrating in detail
on aspects of technology. It would help if people who are interested in
having copies of the original video, and possibly a second video, could let
me know. I will do my best, but make no promises.
