A METHOD for OPTIMAL CONFIGURATION of GATHERING
PIPELINE NETWORKS

Abstract:
Given in the plane N points (sources) from which some material has to be
transported to a gathering station (sink) by means of pipes. The task is
to determine the coordinates of this sink and the routes of pipe
segments so that the capital cost of the gathering network should be
optimal. It is supposed that the building of pipes is nearly at the same
time, or joint channels are applied. Building the pipes partly on the
same route one can achieve a cost cut. This kind of pipeline network
forms a tree structure with a common root and its subtrees are named
generalized Steiner minimal trees. One can improve the reality of
capital cost by determining the detailed routes of pipe segments with
the dynamic programming method re-garding the real building costs. A
method is described for the solution of this problem based on location
and set partitioning models.
