MRC LABORATORIES, THE GAMBIA
DATA MANAGER/STATISTICIAN
MRC Laboratories, The Gambia is the Council's largest establishment concerned with research in international health. The Unit will be undertaking a large-scale efficacy trial of a new 9-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in the eastern part of The Gambia in close cooperation with the National Expanded Programme of Immuni-sation, funded through WHO and external donors. The study area is extensive and data will be entered and monitored at two sites in The Gambia. This is a large-scale trial which will produce a large amount of complex inter-linked data. It therefore needs a person with a BSc or equivalent in data management, computing, statistics or a related subject and a strong background in data management. Preference will be given to candidates with a higher qualification and experience of medical research.
In parallel with the vaccine efficacy study, a variety of ancillary studies will be developed and the postholder will be expected to contribute to the design, planning, applications for funding and implementation of these studies.
In addition to working with the Statistician at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine on the final statistical analysis of the trial, he/she will provide statistical and data management support to the Unit.
The postholder will be based either in Basse (400 kms from Fajara at the coast) or Bansang (300 kms from Fajara) which are rural areas with limited facilities.
The appointment is for 3 years in the first instance, extendable by mutual agreement.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be within the Band 3 range (£18,000 pa - £36,400 pa). For displaced staff the package will include overseas allowances, furnished accommodation, flights and other benefits.
