Vacancy for Senior Statistician
Clinical Trials Unit (Cancer Division)
The Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) has been formed by
the amalgamation of the MRC Cancer Trials Office and the MRC HIV Clinical
Trials Centre. The main aim of the Unit, which is based in London, is to
design and conduct studies and meta-analyses in many different diseases,
including cancer and HIV, with the emphasis on multi-centre, often
international, randomised trials. There is also a strong programme of
methodological research.
We are seeking to appoint a Senior Statistician to join the Cancer Division
which currently comprises approximately 40 staff (including statisticians,
clinicians, scientists, clinical trials managers, IT and administrative
staff). The post-holder will have responsibility for research programmes in
specific cancer types, leading small teams within the Unit, and
collaborating with external clinical groups to develop and undertake
appropriate studies from the initial idea to final reporting. The successful
candidate would also be expected to have an active interest in developing
methodological research either on their own or in collaboration with other
members of the Unit.
We are looking for a Statistician with considerable experience (5-10 years)
in the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials and who is likely to
have a postgraduate qualification in biostatistics or a closely related
subject.
The post-holder should have a strong interest in working in close
collaboration with clinicians and other scientists in developing ideas for
trials and conducting and analysing trials and meta-analyses. Good
communication skills are therefore essential. The appointment will be on
the MRC salary band 2 with an annual salary in the range of £24,500 -
£60,000 plus London Location Allowance (£1,823) depending on qualifications
and experience. (Pay award pending).
The post, which is available immediately, may either be offered as a tenured
appointment or a six year appointment in the first instance dependant on
applicant's experience and achievements to date.
Interested applicants may contact Dr Mahesh KB Parmar (01223 311110 x238)
for further information. Completed applications, consisting of a CV, list of
publications, with the names and addresses of two referees should be sent to
The Personnel Officer, MRC Clinical Trials Unit, 222 Euston Road, London
NW1 2DA. The closing date for applications is 10 September 1999.
