Announcement of an Innovative New Short Course

Clinical Research Methods applied to Randomised Controlled Trials and
Systematic Reviews
Commencing October 1999 at the Institute of Health Sciences, University of
Oxford

COURSE AIM
The aim of the course will be to introduce the participants to the clinical
epidemiological and statistical methods required to undertake randomised
controlled trials and systematic reviews (overviews, meta-analyses).
COURSE FORMAT
The course will adopt an innovative, multidisciplinary approach,
integrating clinical epidemiology with biostatistics.
Teaching will take place one day per week for 10 weeks and each day will
consist of two small group sessions of 3 hours duration. Each small group
will have two tutors and will use problem based learning with the aim of
solving learner-identified problems in the design, analysis, reporting
and interpretation of randomised trials and systematic reviews.
Participants will be expected to devote at least one further day per week
reading and carrying out assignments.
The tutors will be from the Centres for Statistics in Medicine,
Evidence-Based Mental Health, and Evidence-Based Medicine and the Clinical
Trial Service Unit including Douglas Altman, Jon Deeks, John Geddes and
Mike Clarke.
APPLICATIONS
Applications are invited from those who wish to learn more about systematic
reviews and randomised controlled trials
COURSE FEE
850 pounds (University and NHS) or 1950 pounds (Industry) which will
include all materials except textbooks. The number of places is limited.
