I am interested in commissioning some work on statistical and other aspects
of maths education. The budget is less than £1000. The timescale is as soon
as possible - preferably within 8 weeks.
Some of this may be confidential.
If you are interested in this work, please reply as below. Even if you are
not interested in doing the work, I would welcome your comments on what is
worth doing within this timescale and budget.
REPLIES
As I shall be away, please reply initially to Lewis Pike
([log in to unmask]), with copy to me. If applying, please send CV and a
one-pager indicating what you think you can offer for this job and what you
think is worth doing within the stated timescale and budget.
JOB SPECIFICATION
Our specification is not yet precise. The first day's consultancy would
include:
* initial report on what data is available
* agree brief for remainder of contract.
Subsequent work could include e.g.
* number of students taking A-level
* number of maths grads entering teaching. How is this changing? How does
it compare with other countries?
* salary prospects of maths grads
* other useful data on the "production and use" of mathematicians of
various forms.
Possible sources include: the LMS report "Tackling the Mathematics Problem",
examining boards and higher education statistics, etc., etc..
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Ideally we would like someone experienced in dealing with educational
statistics, or a student who could be effectively supervised by such a
person. (Do you know a good student who could do this as a summer job?)
The required output could include e.g.
* a 10-20 page report for publication and general use (with Executive
Summary)
* technical appendix giving sources and notes
* spreadsheets etc. containing data.
Copyright in this output would rest with the contractor (i.e. me), unless
otherwise agreed.
All discussions are confidential and subject to contract, which would be by
an exchange of letters.
Thank you - and have a good summer!
JOHN BIBBY
NB: Please see section headed "REPLIES" - do NOT just reply to me!
