Research Project: Engine Mapping As Automotive Statistical
Modelling
This two-year post-doctoral position offers an excellent opportunity
to undertake statistical modelling in an innovative professional
engineering environment. The work concerns the topic 'engine
mapping', little known outside the automotive area, but which now
has a strong statistical modelling aspect, and is based on data
from designed engine experimentation. It allows the driver to set
engine variables which produce required speed and power, subject
to constrained emissions. The first phase of this work is reported in
Technometrics 40 (1998), 120- 126, and the current project aims to
take it further for use in the next generation of production engines.
The position will be based at the University of Birmingham but
close interaction and reporting to statistically-knowledgeable
engineers at the Ford Engineering and Research Centre in Essex
will be involved. The position should be an excellent launch to the
career of an engineering-inclined statistician. Salary will
reflect the high level of technical and personal qualities required.
