It is not necessarily the only such choice. The University of Sheffield,
for example, has an MSc in Statistics which makes substantial use of
S-plus, has great emphasis on applications and professional skills and has
13 EPSRC studentships, reflecting the assessment of the course by the
EPSRC.
Typically our studentships are over-subscribed, and in the past we too
have often had self-funded UK students. For the coming academic year, we
do have places and studentships available for well-qualified applicants.
