DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS & MODELLING SCIENCE
UNIVERSITY OF STRATHCLYDE
RESEARCH ASSISTANT
We will shortly advertise a post-doctoral R.A. position in the
Dept of Statistics and Modelling Science. The R.A. will join
an international team of marine scientists funded by the EC to
find ways to improve current methodology for determining the
limits set to constrain the harvesting of exploited fish stocks,
cod and haddock in particular, around Iceland, Norway and in the
North Sea.
Our contribution to the project will run for two years and will
involve the statistical modelling of the relationships between
the spatio-temporal distribution of the fish and a number of
important physical, environmental and density-related factors,
using parametric and non-parametric regressions. Such models of
the year-to-year spatial distributions of the fish at different
stages of their life histories will be used to predict their
survival, and hence the potential impact of different levels of
harvesting.
The ideal candidate should have a background in either data
analysis and statistical modelling or marine science. There is
ample opportunity for a statistician to both play an active role
in an important scientific investigation and to develop data
analytic tools and models which would be useful in other
bioscientific investigations. Equally, the post would suit a
marine scientist wishing to develop his/her knowledge and
experience of advanced statistical modelling in this most
challenging of fields.
The appointment will be made at an appropriate point of the
RA1A scale, with a starting date as early as possible.
The Department of Statistics and Modelling Science in the
University of Strathclyde, Glasgow was awarded a 4 in the
last Research Assessment Exercise and enjoys a vigourous
and stimulating research atmosphere.
