The Statistics Department is seeking to increase its professional strength.
MATHEMATICAL MODELLER
This is a senior position which would suit a mathematician or statistician,
preferably with a doctorate, and with eight years professional experience, with
an interest in, and some knowledge of, biology. The post holder will be
required to do research in biological models in collaboration with appropriate
scientists and in a field of relevance to institute interests. This research
will require the development of mathematical methods to solve practical
biological problems. Candidates should be able to offer skills in mathematical
modelling, including neural networks, cellular automation, Markov Chain Monte
Carlo methods and decision networks.
It is intended initially to contribute to two areas.
1. Modelling gene flow in populations
The rapidly expanding amount of genetic molecular information has enabled more
precise statistics about individuals and populations to be obtained. There is
now the need to synthesize and use the information to model gene flow in
populations sampled at different scales and in different structured landscapes.
It is likely that modern mathematical techniques such as diffusion modelling
will be necessary for the spatial-temporal modelling.
2. Disease modelling
Existing and planned experiments allow the possibility of building more
realistic models. Important components will be space-time modelling. The
development of computer-intensive techniques such as Markov Chain Monte Carlo
and the rapidly increasing power of computers allow more realistic models to be
explored, fitted and validated.
This senior post provides an opportunity to join a well-established team of 17
graduate statisticians who provide the quantitative base for the scientific
research work of the Institute of Arable Crops Research.
Qualifications: First or Second Class Honours degree with at least eight years
relevant post-graduate experience. M.Sc or Ph.D preferred.
Salary on Band 4/5 scale. Band 4: 26,400-39,500 pounds; Band 5: 22,898-27,898
