                             TIES / SPRUCE 2000

For the first time, The International Environmetrics Society (TIES) and
Statistics in Public Resources and Utilities, and in Care of the
Environment (SPRUCE) are joining forces to hold an International
Conference, TIES / SPRUCE 2000.

This will be hosted in the UK by The University of Sheffield from 4-8
September 2000.

The theme of TIES / SPRUCE 2000 will be

             CURRENT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES: QUANTITATIVE METHODS

Invited Speakers

Among those who have accepted invitations to give plenary lectures are:

              Julian Besag (Seattle)
              Steve Buckland (St. Andrews)
              Brad Carlin (Minnesota)
              Steve Hanna (Virginia)
              Dave Higdon (North Carolina)
              Gudmund Høst (Oslo)
              Jim McQuaid (HSE, London)
              Tony O'Hagan (Sheffield)
              Paul Sampson (Seattle)
              Lucy Wyatt (Sheffield)

The J. Stuart Hunter lecturer will be Steve Buckland.

Contributed lectures will be selected on the basis of short abstracts. They
can be on any topic relevant to the TIES / SPRUCE 2000 theme given above.
Dates for submitting abstracts will be given on our webpage
http://www.shef.ac.uk/ties-spruce2000/ in due course, as will details about
how to register.

Accomodation

The lectures will all take place on the main campus of the University of
Sheffield, which is within easy walking distance of the centre of the City
of Sheffield (and there is good public transport). There will be a choice
of accommodation:
en-suite rooms in Halifax Hall, a student residence within easy
reach of the campus
local hotels at specially negotiated rates
There will be a varied social programme beginning with a reception on the
evening of Monday 4 September 2000.

The Location

The University of Sheffield is one of the largest of the renowned
"redbrick" Universities in the UK. Further information about the University
can be found on its Homepage http://www.shef.ac.uk/.

The City of Sheffield is one of the largest in England. Although its great
growth in the 19th century was founded on the steel industry, especially
cutlery, it has changed dramatically in the 1990s. It recently hosted the
World Student Games, and is the location for the government backed UK
Sports Institute and for the National Centre for Popular Music. It is a
friendly city that has been described as the biggest village in the world.
Sheffield is close to beautiful countryside, especially the Peak National
Park. It is easy to reach from the major gateways of London and Manchester
using road or rail.

RSS Meeting 2000

This meeting will be genuinely multi-disciplinary and, as such, will foster
new links as well as building on existing ones.

It has been timed so that delegates at TIES / SPRUCE 2000 can attend the
RSS Meeting in Reading the following week. Further information about this
meeting can be found on: http://www.rdg.ac.uk/rss2000/.

COFIN

TIES/SPRUCE 2000 will be immediately followed by a Workshop on the
EU-sponsored COFIN project (Concentration Fluctuations in Gas Releases by
Industrial Accidents). COFIN is a collaboration between the Risø National
Laboratory, Roskilde, Denmark and the University of Sheffield. The dates of
the COFIN Workshop are 9-12 September 2000, and it is intended that the
last day (8th September 2000) of TIES/SPRUCE 2000 will include papers that
focus on atmospheric dispersion and industrial accidents, thereby
overlapping with the COFIN Workshop. Many participants may attend both
meetings.

The Local Organising Committee is Professor Clive Anderson (Co-Chair), Dr
Paul Blackwell, Professor Philip Chatwin (Co-Chair), Dr Richard Martin, Dr
Nils Mole, Professor Tony O'Hagan and Marianna Keray.

Requests for further information, for a hard copy of the conference flier
or for registration, should be addressed to [log in to unmask]
