Day meeting on health information for Primary Care Groups

Date and venue:	12 March 1999, Guy's Hospital, London
Title "PCGs and their populations - what health information is needed?"
Theme of the day
What kind of information and infrastructure is needed so that PCGs can
impact on the health of local people? What needs to be done to develop
these?

The meeting will be structured around these three questions:
· What are the roles of PCGs?
· What are the information needs arising from these?
· What are the issues in meeting these needs and what needs to be done?

This will be a "working meeting", and the aim will be to feed back health
information users views to the Department of Health, IMG, and the ONS
Public Health Statistics Advisory Committee as part of the consultation
process for implementing Information for Health.

Context
Information for Health sets out the direction for the development of health
information to meet the needs of the New NHS. However, the emphasis is on
clinical information and the infrastructure for this. Issues about how the
information will be used, and public health needs for information are not
considered in any detail. In particular, there are considerable new needs
for public health information for Primary Care Groups to contribute to the
development and implementation of HImPs.

Outline of the meeting
What are the roles of PCGs
à Department of Health view
à Local view
What are the information needs arising from these?
à Improving the health of the community - PCGs and HImPs/HAZs
à Developing primary and community services
à Commissioning secondary services
What are the issues in meeting these needs and what needs to be done?
à Estimating the size of PCG populations and differences with registered
patients
à Public Health Data for PCGs - what is available now and which routine
sources can be produced at a PCG level?
à What information is available from General Practice?
à What is the role of Information for Health?

Cost:	The fees will be £80 for HSUG members and £90 for non members (for
non members the fee includes a year's membership to HSUG)
