Statistical advisers to the BMJ's hanging committee
Applications are invited from medical statisticians to join the pool
attending the BMJ's hanging (editorial) committee. Applicants should
have a sound understanding of medical statistics and a broad interest
in health research: they should enjoy the challenge of debating the
scientific and clinical or health policy merits of articles submitted to the
BMJ. Applicants who have refereed articles for the BMJ are especially
welcomed.
Applicants must be able to attend meetings at BMA House between 4pm and
6 pm on Monday afternoons. Most members attend about once a month.
Twelve papers are discussed at each meeting, and the debates are usually
educational and enjoyable. Papers are distributed and read in advance,
and the statistician will have to take one or two away afterwards to
prepare a written report. Members are paid two consultant sessions for
the time involved with an additional payment for the written reports. We
will also meet travel expenses.
Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed, and appointments will be
subject to mutual review after three months. Applications should be in
the form of a curriculum vitae and personal letter. Referees are not
required, but details of a maximum of three published articles, evidence
of ability to communicate clearly with clinicians, and any experience in
peer reviewing should be given.
Applications should be addressed to Dr Sandy Goldbeck-Wood, BMJ, BMA
House, Tavistock Square, London WC1H 9JR and should be received by
Friday 21 May.
