Modern Approaches to the Epidemiology and Control of Infectious Disease
(http://www.ceid.ox.ac.uk/course/)
6th - 24th September 1999
A three week course presented by the Wellcome Trust Centre for the
Epidemiology of Infectious Disease (WTCEID), part of the University of
Oxford.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------
In recent years significant advances have been made in our understanding of
the transmission dynamics of infectious disease in human and animal
populations. A major contributor to these advances has been the development
of modern quantitative research methods.
Today these methods play an increasing role in influencing the collection
and interpretation of field and laboratory observations, developing
epidemiological theory and suggesting new approaches to the rational design
of control strategies in both industrialised and developing countries.
This course has been developed by a leading research team to help satisfy
the growing demand for a thorough but short update in the essential elements
and practically relevant aspects of this important field.

----------------------------------------------------
Who Should Attend?
- Policy makers and other workers in public health organisations, disease
control agencies or field situations, who seek an understanding of the
epidemiology and control of infectious diseases.
- Medical, veterinary and biological researchers working in industry,
universities and other research institutions who wish to keep abreast of the
leading edge developments in this field.
- Researchers in related fields, such as infectious disease immunologists
and theoretical biologists, who wish to adopt an inter-disciplinary
approach.
- Teachers of epidemiology who need to incorporate these innovative
techniques and methods of presenting quantitative material into training
programmes.
Participants will normally have a university or equivalent education
involving an element of quantitative analysis, and/or experience which has
enabled them to recognise the benefits of a working knowledge of modern
quantitative methods.
Participants do not need a sophisticated knowledge of statistics or
mathematics to undertake the course and benefit substantially from it. The
key modelling techniques used by leading epidemiological researchers will be
presented step by step in a comprehensible and usable manner
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------
Special features
- The number of participants will be restricted to approximately twenty, to
allow for individual attention
- Delivery by active researchers from a leading academic centre
- Tuition, by an integrated combination of lectures, practicals, project
groups and tutorials, developed through the experience of six previous
courses
- Hands on computer use for practical work, including spread-sheets and
simulation packages, supported by experienced demonstrators
- Substantial course notes in addition to free copy of course book
Infectious Diseases of Humans: Dynamics and Control
- Opportunities to present your work and to benefit from discussion with
other participants with a wide range of epidemiological experience from
around the world
The course will be held at the University of Oxford's new Wellcome Trust
Centre for the Epidemiology of Infectious Disease (WTCEID). The Centre has
excellent purpose-built facilities for high-level short courses.
