Abstract:
Health inequalities are pervasive in the UK as elsewhere in other
developed countries. Explanations for inequalities are much less well
established. Although it has been known for some time that risks tend
to cluster according to socio-economic group, it is only in recent
years that accumulating risks from early life have been emphasised in
relation to health inequalities. Disentangling the impact of different
influences and different life stages has now become a major focus of
research. It is important to know, for example, how much physical and
emotional development and adverse circumstances in early life
contribute to health inequalities later in adulthood. An overview will
be presented of recent and ongoing work on the 1958 birth cohort study
that traces the origins of health inequalities in early adult life.
Chris Power is Reader in Epidemiology and Public Health at the
Institute of Child Health.
