ACADEMIC MEDICAL CENTRE, UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM

The Academic Medical Center (AMC) of the University of Amsterdam (The
Netherlands) Department of Human Retrovirology has a vacancy for a
post-doc
(full-time) in

Applied mathematics / Bio-statistics.

He /she will be involved in the mathematical modelling of the dynamics
of the
infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the causative
agent of
AIDS. In combination with modelling of the kinetics of the immune
response to
HIV, attempts to describe and analyse the pathogenesis of the
HIV-infection as
well as the effects of treatment of the infection are made. Specific
focus of
research is the development and dynamics of HIV that becomes resistant
to
anti-HIV drugs. Clinical and virological data obtained from HIV-infected

patients followed prospectively for a period of more than 12 years as
well as
from protocolised clinical trials with combinations of anti-HIV drugs
are used
in analyses.

The Department of Human Retrovirology (head: Professor Jaap Goudsmit)
encompasses a group of medical doctors, biochemists and biologists
involved in
clinical and experimental virological research on HIV and AIDS. The
Department
recently started a small research group of 3 persons that is involved in
a more
thorough analysis of experimentally obtained data aiming at a better
understanding of underlying mechanisms of the HIV-infection and
HIV-related
disease, as well as the effects of interventions in the infection. This
group is
key in the collaboration between the Department and the group of
Professor Roy
Anderson of the Wellcome Trust Centre for the Epidemiology of Infectious
Disease
at the University of Oxford (UK).

He/she has a PhD in applied mathematics or bio-statistics, is proficient
in the
use of a statistical language like S-plus and skilled in C or Fortran.
Knowledge
of biology or willingness to acquire knowledge on virus infections is
appreciated.
For statistical support the post-doc collaborates with the Department of

Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics of the Academic Medical Centre
of the
University of Amsterdam.

Salary: Depending on age and (working) experience between Dutch guilders
4948
(USD 2470) and 5929 (USD 2965) per month.

Period: 1 year with an extension to three years.

Address:
Department of Human Retrovirology
AMC, University of Amsterdam
