LEEDS MEDICAL STATISTICS GROUP SEMINAR
The next seminar in our series will be:
MAGNUS McGEE
from the MRC Biostatistics Unit, Cambridge.
"The blind man and the elephant: what are Activities of Daily Living?"
2pm, Tuesday 7th December, 1999.
Abstract:
Assessing activities of daily living (ADL) using scales is common. However, it
is too easy to overlook what the scale measures. As a background to reporting
the structure of one ADL scale, the modified Townsend Disability Scale, a
literature search was made. A number of deficiencies were found in published
papers. These include incorrect choice of method which may have led to
different conclusions if the data were re-analysed correctly. Here the
development, application and interpretation of ADL scales are considered.
Recommendations on methods and reporting of the structure of a scale via factor
analyses are made including a simple plot to assist with interpretation.
Seminars are held at 34 Hyde Terrace, Leeds University.
Everybody welcome. Please don't be put off by the title! :-)
