Research Assistant in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health
The Institute of Child Health is a postgraduate medical school of the
University of London.
The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health is involved in research
and teaching in a number of areas in child health, and some members also
provide a clinical service to the Hospital for Sick Children's NHS Trust.
The Department has multi-disciplinary expertise in, and resources for, the
epidemiological study of childhood disorders. A developing area of research
in the department is the epidemiological study of vision and
ophthalmological disorders in children with work underway on congenital
cataract, unilateral amblyopia and visual impairment.
A part-time research assistant (RA1B grade) is required to join a
multidisciplinary team based at both ICH and the London School of Hygiene
and Tropical Medicine. The research assistant will be based at ICH and work
closely with members of the study team at both institutions on a new
combined quantitative and qualitative study of the needs of parents of
children recently diagnosed as visually impaired and the extent to which
these needs are being met by existing health services.
The post-holder will:
1. be responsible for co-ordination of the study, including day to day
administration such as correspondence and other communications with
clinicians, maintaining references and other study documents
2. be responsible for data management including data checking and data entry
3. contribute to data analysis
4. participate in writing reports and papers about study findings
The successful applicant will:
a) hold a higher degree in a relevant discipline
b) ideally have some experience of research in a health related discipline
c) be able to work on their own initiative and have good communication and
organisational skills
d) have relevant data management, statistical, administrative and word
processing skills
The post is 50- 60% whole time equivalent for 3 years and is available
immediately.
Salary is 50-60% WTE on the RA1B scale, starting between points 4 and 6
(100% WTE, £18,420 to £20,319 inclusive of London weighting per annum)
depending on age and experience.
