SPSS Inc. announces plans for new Macintosh version of SPSS
Data mining leader cites Apple's recent success as reason for return to Mac
platform
CHICAGO, October 27, 1999 - The latest version of the world's best-selling
desktop statistical software will soon be available in a Macintosh version.
SPSS Inc. (Nasdaq: SPSS) today announced SPSS 10.0, the award-winning data
analysis software, is expected to return to the Macintosh platform before
the end of summer 2000. The company is finalizing a partnership with
Software MacKiev, a company with extensive experience in Macintosh
conversions, to deliver the first new version of SPSS on the Macintosh
platform since version 6.1 was released in 1995. SPSS discontinued
development of its flagship statistics product on the Macintosh platform
when it began building new technologies, not yet available for the
Macintosh, into the product. SPSS' return to the Macintosh
is prompted by the advent of new Apple technology and persistent requests
from growing, loyal groups of users including academicians, university
computing departments, students and researchers.
"It's great to respond to the people who have been so loyal to Apple and
SPSS," said Mark Battaglia, executive vice president of marketing for SPSS.
"When we stopped developing for the Macintosh platform, it was a difficult
decision. On the one hand we have a sizable group of customers who wanted a
new release, but on the other hand, we faced enormous technical obstacles
and a financial responsibility to our shareholders. Now, with a substantial
Apple customer base and Software MacKiev's support in bringing SPSS 10.0 to
the Macintosh, we can responsibly do both."
As a partner in Apple's developer program, SPSS is receiving support from
Apple to market the new product. Together, the two companies will introduce
SPSS 10.0 for the Macintosh worldwide in the summer of 2000. The marketing
campaign will revolve around a theme of "Ten on Ten" referring to SPSS 10.0
running on the Mac OS X operating system. SPSS 10.0 for the Macintosh will
also run on Mac OS 8.5 and later, including Apple's new Mac OS 9 operating
system introduced Friday.
"Apple is happy that SPSS is returning to the Mac platform, and this
well-timed release allows SPSS to capitalize on the Pentium-toasting speed
of the Power Macintosh G4 processor with Velocity Engine," said Clent
Richardson, vice president of worldwide developer relations for Apple.
"Developers around the world have seen the tremendous business opportunity
in developing Macintosh products, and SPSS 10.0 is going to capitalize on
this tremendous opportunity before them."
Software MacKiev, a Ukrainian corporation with offices in Cupertino, Calif.,
specializes in converting education and consumer applications from Windows
to the Macintosh platform. The company will reengineer SPSS 10.0 so that it
runs as a native Macintosh application while remaining compatible with the
Windows version. They will also modify the user interface according to
standard Macintosh guidelines so that it will be comfortable for Macintosh
users.
"Converting a Windows-based program to the Macintosh platform can be
complicated," Battaglia said. "This is especially true with software as
complex as SPSS for Windows. We are extremely impressed with Software
MacKiev and, based on their excellent track record and technical expertise,
we are confident in their ability to make this a success."
Currently, Macintosh customers can use SPSS 6.1 for the Macintosh.
Additionally, earlier this year, SPSS successfully tested SPSS 9.0 for
Windows on Macintosh computers via a PC emulator. For more details, visit:

including SPSS Base and certain key modules that require SPSS Base, is
expected to ship late in the summer of 2000. Release of the remaining
modules is scheduled for later in the year. For details on SPSS 10.0 and a
