Information Analyst / Statistician
Starting Salary : up to £17,181
The Information and Statistics Division (ISD) provides statistical and
information management advice to the Scottish Executive Health Department,
health boards, NHS trusts and a wide variety of professional groups
concerned with the planning and management of the NHS in Scotland. Within
ISD, the Scottish Cancer Intelligence Unit (SCIU) includes the functions of
cancer registration, surveillance and epidemiology, and the evaluation of
screening and therapy. The Unit is a well established source of information
on cancer used by clinicians, policy-makers and researchers in Scotland and
internationally.
You would be a key role in the provision of statistical support to the
Scottish Breast and Cervical Screening Programmes. If the Screening
Programmes are to achieve their aims health service clinicians, GPs, the
media and the general public need clear information about every stage of the
screening process and the performance of the programmes. You will be
expected to become involved with the provision and interpretation of data to
the screening programme's various quality assurance groups, screening centre
staff and clinicians. The work will also involve contributing to the running
of the ad hoc information request service and the provision of data to
various statistical publications. In addition there will be opportunities
for you to contribute to work carried out within other areas of the Unit.
This is an interesting and challenging post which requires good analytical
and communication skills. Applications are invited from graduates in a
numerate discipline. Experience in health information or medical statistics
would be an advantage but is not essential.

2. JOB PURPOSE To play a key role in the provision of statistical support
to the Scottish Breast and Cervical Screening Programmes (SBSP and SCSP).
The post holder will also become involved in exploiting data on cancer risk
factors, incidence, treatment and survival collected by ISD.
3. DIMENSIONS The post-holder will be involved with the dissemination of
information from the SBSP Information System and the Scottish Cancer
Registration System. This will involve both routine information provision
and project oriented work in collaboration with colleagues within the CSA
including the Screening Programme's Central Co-ordinating Unit, with
clinicians and staff in screening centres and the wider Health Service in
Scotland.

5. ROLE OF THE DEPARTMENT The Scottish Cancer Intelligence Unit (SCIU)
aims to collect, analyse, interpret and present information on cancer risk
factors, prevention, occurrence, treatment and survival in the Scottish
population. This information is provided to groups within the Scottish
Office, the NHS and academic sectors, as well as the cancer charities,
members of the public and the media. The key challenge is to ensure that
SCIU information and research is relevant to public health policy, the
management of health care resources and evaluation of interventions
including screening and therapy.
6. KEY RESULT AREAS Contribute to the running of the ad hoc information
request service ensuring that responses to requests are dealt with in an
accurate and timely manner, and are fit for purpose. Provision of data to
the screening programmes various quality assurance groups ensuring that high
quality information is produced to appropriate time scales. To acquire
knowledge of statistical methods available for epidemiological analysis.
Interpretation of results of statistical analyses in order to provide
information which is relevant to clinicians and policy-makers. Provision
of information to routine statistical publications. Contribution to the
collection and processing of data for audit work (e.g. BASO Audit of Screen
Detected Breast Cancers). Provision of statistical support for other
projects involved with the screening programmes as they arise. Attendance at
relevant meetings, courses and conferences as required. Ensure that results
are presented to a high standard of reporting, and are fit-for-purpose.
Report regularly on progress to senior statistician.
7. ASSIGNMENT AND REVIEW OF WORK Formal line management reporting for
the post-holder will be to the Senior Statistician.
8. COMMUNICATIONS AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS Daily contact with Cancer
Surveillance Group Statisticians Formal monthly meetings with line manager
Direct liaison with customers, data providers, interested clinicians and ISD
colleagues Meetings with Screening Programmme's Central Co-ordinating Unit
every two months
9. MOST CHALLENGING PART OF THE JOB Providing high quality information
of relevance to the Health Service within appropriate time scales.
10. QUALIFICATIONS AND/OR EXPERIENCE SPECIFIED FOR THE POST Numerate
graduate, preferably in statistics. Good analytical and communication
skills. Ability to organise work and meet deadlines. Experience in health
information or medical statistics advantageous but not essential.
