LECTURESHIP IN STATISTICS (Ref: 1999/0479)
Applications are invited for a post in Statistics at the Lecturer
level, with a starting date of January, 2000. Applicants may have research
interests in any area of Applied Probability or Statistics and should have,
or expect soon to obtain, a Ph.D. A strong commitment to enhancing the
research profile of the Statistics group within the School of Mathematics
is essential.

POST
Applications are invited from active researchers for the post of Lecturer in
Statistics. The University has decided to strengthen the
Statistics/Operational Research Division, within the School of
Mathematics, following the departure of several members of staff who
have gained promotion to posts at other Universities.
Research
The research interests of the Statistics/Operational Research Division are
both on the theoretical and applications sides of the subject area, and
preference will be given to candidates who can complement or
supplement the research effort in applied statistics. The main interests of
current statistics staff are in multivariate statistics, time series analysis,
optimum experimental design and applications in medicine, biology,
market research, and econometrics. Research facilities are excellent, with
each member of staff being provided with a top-of-the-range PC, plus
associated peripherals. Access to relevant statistics packages is via a
network with a central server. There are a number of Ph.D. students in
residence at present.
Teaching
The School offers 11 modules in Statistics at the undergraduate level, but
no longer supports a postgraduate taught course. The undergraduate
modules are popular with students, and class sizes are often quite large (>
50 students). The complete list of Statistics modules is as follows:
Year 1 Introduction to Probability
Statistical Inference I
Year 2 Elements of Probability and Statistics
(Double Module)
Year 3 Statistical Inference III
Advanced Regression Techniques
Experimental Design
Medical Statistics
Forecasting
Sampling Theory
Computational Statistics
Applicants should indicate which subject area they could contribute to
immediately.
SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICS
The School of Mathematics is situated in a modern Building, known as
the Mathematics Institute, located in a central position within the
University campus, yet within five minutes walking time of the main city
shopping complex and Cardiff's magnificent Civic Centre.
Staff accommodation is good, with each member of staff being allocated their
own room containing computing facilities. The building houses the
Mathematics Library, and a Senior Common Room for Mathematics staff
and postgraduate students. There are three computing laboratories
available specifically for Mathematics students, together with a public
computing laboratory, making a total of more than 50 Pentium PCs which
are accessible to Mathematics students within the University. In addition
there are two staff computing laboratories, which contain more specialised
equipment such as scanners, colour and laser printers etc. The School
has one of the largest intakes in the UK at the undergraduate level, with
about 130 new students being admitted to single-honours mathematics
degree schemes each year. In addition, the School also participates in a
number of joint honours degrees with other departments.
The School currently has nine professors, two readers, two senior
lecturers, nine lecturers, one senior research associate, four research
associates, five research fellows, and three part-time lecturing staff.
