The Spanish statisticians have been discussing how economic time series
can be continued and compared with the time before the Euro. One point
that I do not recall hearing in any of the UK discussions is that the EURO
is not just a fixing of the ECU, since the ECU was based on a basket of
currencies and the EURO was fixed relative to each national currency at a
certain date. Does the ECU continue, and what is now in the basket - the
ECU, the pound sterling and the drachma?
