Collaborative Research Studentship
A postgraduate research student is sought to work on a project to
investigate the effect of poverty on the relationship between cold weather
and extreme weather events and mortality and hospital admissions in the West
Midlands. The project has been funded by the University of Birmingham
Multidisciplinary Research Fund.
Tenure
Funding has been secured for 1 year effective immediately. Extension for a
second year will be consequent upon adequate progress and submission of an
application for further funding to a grant-giving body. The student must be
available to start the project by 15th May 1999
Location
Collaborative studentship within the Department of Public Health and
Epidemiology, School of Medicine, the Geographical Information System
facility in the West Midlands Cancer Intelligence Unit and the School of
Geography.
Requirements
The student will have a first degree (upper second class honours or above)
in a relevant discipline. The range of fields includes Statistics,
Geography, Health Sciences, Biological Sciences or Environmental Health.
The student will require information technology skills, including
proficiency in the use of personal computers. Knowledge of word-processing,
spreadsheets, data manipulation and data analysis using statistical packages
would be an advantage. The student will need to have basic statistical
skills, and knowledge and skills in the statistical analysis of time series
would be an advantage.
Stipend
The student will be paid a stipend equivalent to that offered by the UK
research councils for postgraduate research students, currently standing at
#7070 per annum for a first year student. The student will be expected to
register for a PhD degree, and the fee is included in the studentship award.
