ONE DAY INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE EVALUATION OF ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL
POLICIES
Initial notice and call for papers
RSS Social Statistics Section
The RSS (Social Statistics Section) is holding a one day international
conference on 'The evaluation of economic and social policies' on Tuesday 4
July 2000. The main focus of the conference will be papers that use the
latest theoretical developments, and either suggest or report on
applications. The conference is about evaluation methods, illuminated by
reference to the impact of evaluations and key findings.
Four leading international experts in the field will be speaking at the
conference:
Jim Riccio, MDRC, New York, USA:
Random Assignment and Alternatives, Including the Example of
Jobs-Plus Evaluation
Jeffrey Smith, University of Western Ontario, Canada:
The Sensitivity of Alternative Non-experimental Estimators: A
Simulation Study.
Michael Lechner, SIAW, University of St. Gallen, Switzerland:
Programme Heterogeneity and Propensity Score Matching: Recent
results from
an evaluation of the Swiss active labour market policies.
Robert Walker, CRSP, Loughborough University, UK:
Can Social Science Evaluate New Labour's Policies?
We are looking to include a range of other contributed presentations, some
of 30 minutes and others 15 minutes each. Papers will be submitted before
the event and refereed (after the event) for publication in a thematic
edition of the Journal of the RSS (Series A). You are invited to send in a
proposal for a contributed paper with an abstract of about 300 words, by 31
December 1999. Please approach one of the Steering Group members listed
below if you wish to discuss in advance.
The emphasis of the conference will be on quantitative rather than
qualitative evaluation. Topics of particular interest are the 'harder'
measures produced by random experiments, quasi-experimental methods, and
analyses of existing longitudinal data. Contributions of different kinds
are welcome, whether reviews of the field, description of work in progress,
or reports of recent findings. We wish to draw attention to the latest
theoretical developments, to increase awareness of them and their
application. We would also like to highlight statistical aspects, and to
encourage statisticians to take a greater interest in evaluation.
Proposals and abstracts are invited by 31 December 1999. Final papers will
be required by 30 April 2000. Please send your proposal and 300 word
abstract to:
