There will be a meeting of the South Wales local group of the Royal
Statistical Society tomorrow, Wednesday 20 October, at 5.00 pm at
the University of Wales College of Medicine, Heath Park, Cardiff.
Dr. Frank Dunstan, of the Department of Medical Computing and
Statistics, UWCM will speak on:
Downs syndrome screening - how should we assess it?
Abstract.
The talk will outline the statistical procedures underlying the vast
majority of methods for screening for Downs Syndrome. The
effectiveness of a screening programme is usually expressed in terms of
an estimated detection rate. The talk will describe two methods for this
estimation and compare their efficiencies. The use of the detection rate
as a measure of effectiveness has many problems associated with it, not
least that it is often estimated from a very small sample. These problems
will be described, together with suggestions for overcoming some of
them, and other areas of controversy will be discussed.
Fellows and all others are welcome to attend. Croeso cynnes i
