Department of Applied Mathematics
Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences
The University of Adelide
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
January 1, 2000, will be marked at The University of Adelaide by the
merger of Statistics and Applied Mathematics, and the offering of a
revitalised joint teaching and research programme in Statistics and
Applied Probability. Current research interests in the department
include biostatistics,teletraffic theory, stochastic modelling,
finance, optimisation, groundwater modelling and fluid
dynamics. Majors and Honours are offered in both Applied Mathematics
and Statistics.

The Applied Mathematics Department of The University of Adelaide has
consistently had an excellent record in research publications, in the
number and success of postgraduate research students, and in the
attraction of research grants and research consultancies.

The department aims to strengthen the Statistics (teaching and
research) side of the department, and consequently is seeking to fill
two positions (one at level B/C, and one at Level A) with
enthusiastic, motivated staff members, who can provide energy and
vitality to the new Statistics programme.

Given the existing expertise in the department, and the links we wish
to encourage we particularly seek applicants in the areas of financial
statistics, biostatistics and epidemiology, image analysis, computer
intensive methods in statistics, or reliability and quality control;
however, applicants from other areas of Statistics are STRONGLY
encouraged to apply.

The two positions  available are:

 1.  LECTURER LEVEL B/C. Ref: 7208.
Tenurable from February 1, 2000.

Essential criteria include:

- a PhD in a relevant area
- excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to teach large
  classes
- ability to provide Honours and Postgraduate supervision
- ability to contribute to the research performance of the department.

Success in obtaining of competitive Research Grants and in performance
of statistical consulting are both highly desirable.

The level of the appointment will be commensurate with the abilities
and experience of the successful applicant.


2. LECTURER LEVEL A. Ref:7207.
Three year fixed term from February 1, 2000 to January 31, 2003.

Essential criteria include:

 - possess, or be enrolled in,  a Ph.D,
 - be able to demonstrate potential in both research and teaching.

Salaries:
Associate Lecturer (Level A)- $33,905-46,013.
Lecturer (Level B)- $48,435-57,518.
Senior Lecturer (Level C)- $59,332-68,415.

LEVEL B/C

ESSENTIAL MINIMUM CRITERIA

1.Ph.D or equivalent in Statistics.
2.Excellence in research and teaching in an area of Statistics.
3.Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, with both
        students and staff.
4.Demonstrated ability to teach at all levels, including lecturing large
        classes.
5.Demonstrated record of research achievements, as evidenced by some or
        all of the following: publications, conference papers, research
        grants, etc.
6.Interest in students, and ability to motivate them.
7.Ability to work as part of a team.
8.Ability to carry out administrative duties as directed by the Head of
        Department, effectively and efficiently.
9.For an appointment at Level C, evidence of academic leadership and higher
        levels of achievement in 1-8 above.

DESIRABLE CHARACTERISTICS

1.An interest in one of the following areas of Statistics: biostatistics and
      epidemiology, financial statistics, image analysis, computer intensive
      methods in statistics, reliability and quality control.
2.Ability to attract funded research projects to the department.
3.Evidence of successful statistical consulting for industry and government departments.
4.Ability to attract honours and postgraduate students to the department.

(MAIN RESEARCH AREAS of the department are in the fields of
biostatistics, epidemiology,  applied probability,
teletraffic theory, stochastic modelling,  financial mathematics,
optimisation, network design, groundwater modelling,
fluid dynamics, solid mechanics and computational mathematics.)

6.Interest in students, and ability to motivate them.
7.Ability to work as part of a team.
8.Ability to carry out administrative duties as directed by the Head of
        Department, effectively and efficiently.

DESIRABLE CHARACTERISTICS

       methods instatistics, reliability and quality control.
2.Consulting or research achievement, as evidenced by some or all of the
