M.Sc in Operational Research and Management Science
University of Edinburgh
One year taught postgraduate course run jointly by the
Management School and the Department of Mathematics and
Statistics
This course seeks to develop skills, which build on a numerate first
degree, in the ability to handle information and use it effectively in
making decisions. Such skills are essential to modern
management. The M.Sc aims to instil a knowledge of the modelling
of management decisions, an understanding of Operational
Research approaches and solution methods to aiding such
decisions and an understanding of the management environment
surrounding these situations. The course consists of 8 compulsory
modules which cover the modelling process, the basic O.R.
toolkit, the mathematics and statistics that underpin that toolkit
and the business environment together with the choice of 5 (out of
12) options including ones on using high performance computing,
risk management and credit scoring. Students then will do a three
month project with an outside organisation. The M.Sc is aimed at
graduates with a first or second class degree in a subject with a
substantial mathematical content such as mathematics, statistics,
computer science, engineering, physical and biological sciences,
economics, business and psychology.
