FURTHER INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES

The Department of Statistics, Accountancy and Management
Science
The SAMS Department (Head of Department, Mick
Broadbent) consists of 29 full-time and 5 part-time
academic staff equivalents and is supported by 4
administrative staff. It consists of the accountancy,
statistics and operational research academic groups.
The Department has a very active research base with a
number of MPhil/PhD students and a high proportion of
academic staff engaged in personal or group research
projects. SAMS is one of three departments which
together make up the University's Business School.

The Statistics Group
(See http://www.herts.ac.uk/business/groups/stats.htm)
The Statistics Group consists of ten academic staff,
four of whom are chartered statisticians. Michael
Healy who is a university visiting professor and a
former professor of statistics at the University of
London, is a member of the Group. Members contribute
to teaching, research and consultancy as well as
sharing in the administration of courses. Due to the
similarities of interests many activities of the Group
are closely integrated with those of the ten members of
the Operational Research Group.

Research
The main areas of current research activity are in
applied statistics; medical, social and industrial
applications being the main strengths. The dominant
tradition of research in statistics at the University
of Hertfordshire has been in applications of the
subject often in collaboration with specialists from
other disciplines.

The Group's current research interests in applied
statistics include:

* structural equation modelling * multilevel modelling
* graphical representations * nonparametric regression
* index construction * classification trees
* epidemiology and health * ordinal repeated measurements
* statistical quality control * spatial statistics
* business forecasting/planning * management decision making

There are collaborative ventures with staff in other
University departments and faculties. Of particular
importance in this respect are: Radiography,
Psychology, Business, Engineering, Nursing and
Education. An MRC funded project initiated through
collaboration with the radiography department is
nearing completion. The statisticians at the
University of Hertfordshire have a history of
collaborative research with other disciplines and it is
intended that this tradition should continue and
increase.

Current external collaborative projects include joint
work with the Health Statistics User Group, the Royal
Statistical Society, London Regional Health Authority,
Watford Hospital and the Open University.

The University of Hertfordshire has a broad subject mix
with particular research strengths in several areas
where statistical support is essential. These include
business, psychology, biology, radiography, nursing,
clinical sciences, engineering and quantitatively
oriented social science including education.

Local Research Links
The Herts/Beds Local Group of the Royal Statistical
Society organises research seminars many of which are
held at the University. Many members of the Group are
actively involved in these seminars at which they are
joined by statisticians who work locally in the
pharmaceutical and other industries or at the
Government's agricultural research station at
Rothamsted, Harpenden.

UH Statistics Advice Service
The Group provides advice on the design and analysis of
surveys and experiments and on the use of statistical
packages such as SPSS, SAS, Minitab in the form of a
drop in clinic at the Maths Centre on the Hatfield
Campus. The service is funded centrally through the
Vice Chancellor's office.

The Statistical Services And Consultancy Unit
 (See http://www.herts.ac.uk/business/centres/sscu.htm)
This was launched by members of the Statistics Group in
1996 and is currently undertaking projects in the areas
of:

* models for manpower planning * statistics training
* expert witness role * water use models
* lottery machine testing * review of applications for health
                                  authority funding

The resulting consultancy and contract research work is
expected to benefit statistics research by stimulating
work on commercial and industrial problems which
require the development of innovative statistical
approaches.

Teaching
The Group offers Single Honours and Combined Studies
undergraduate degree courses in Statistics on the
Hatfield Campus and BSc degrees in Business Decision
Sciences, Business Statistics and Management Sciences
on the Hertford Campus

There is, in addition, an important service element in
the Group's teaching programme. It provides courses in
Statistics for undergraduate students in Business,
Accounting, Engineering, Mathematics, Nursing and in
Combined Studies and also contributes in either
statistics or research methods to the M.Sc. degrees in
Quality Engineering, Occupational Psychology, Clinical
Sciences, Imaging Science, Nursing, Decision Sciences
and Business Administration.
