National Focus for Work on Response to Chemical Incidents

A high calibre scientific officer is now required by the National
Focus. The National Focus is a small team of public health
professionals contracted by the UK Departments of Health, to provide a
centralised unit to co-ordinate work in response to chemical incidents
and surveillance of health effects attributed to chemical incidents in
the whole of the UK. The National Focus plays an important role in
alerting and briefing the UK Health Departments in England, Northern
Ireland, Scotland and Wales on the public health aspects of chemical
incidents, and in co-ordinating advice, where required, to public
health professionals at the local level. Other activities include
co-ordinating and promoting public health interest in relation to
emergency planning, training and surveillance initiatives and in
developing best practise guides.
You will provide scientific support in relation to all aspects of the
National Focus activities. You will possess a good honours degree in
an appropriate discipline although a higher degree or equivalent will
be preferred. In particular, applications will be welcome from
individuals with a background in environmental epidemiology however,
applicants with experience in health service/emergency planning,
toxicology, environmental chemistry, environmental health and/or other
relevant subject areas will also be considered.
You may have the lead role in maintaining the UK National Surveillance
system for chemical incidents, which was investigated by the National
Focus in 1998. The post will be based in Cardiff and will involve
travel elsewhere in the United Kingdom. Appointments will initially be
for the period up to the 31st March 2001 however, there is a
likelihood that the contract will be extended beyond this date.

Salary:- stlg20,876 - stlg24,550 pa (dependent upon experience)
